With my time in Highguard behind me, I returned to Duke Nukem Forever on Sunday to finish up my playthrough on Insane. I definitely started leaning on “glitching” into the cheats working more, as some of the encounters on the increased difficulty were downright unfair. ESPECIALLY almost any time the Octabrains showed up en masse. But with infinite ammo and invincibility I was pretty quickly done (I didn’t even fathom trying the end battle without cheats) and now it’s onto the DLC! But, first…

Eat my Devastator, octa-pussy.
Since Lightyear Frontier is leaving Game Pass and is estimated at around a 16 hour completion, I figured I’d get to it and knock the game out before the end of the week. But, it didn’t take long until I realized something didn’t quite add up between TrueAchievements’ data and guides and what I was playing. It appears that last year the developer FRAME BREAK totally reconfigured the upgrades, economy, and entire map. I’m not sure which is better, but the new setup takes a good fair bit longer to complete. And, while I’m not too perturbed by this, the gameplay loop got boring fairly quickly. Essentially, every day in-game you make sure your crops are tended to, and then you head out into the wilderness to collect new materials, clean biomes, and maybe expand your base. Aaaaand, repeat ad nauseum. The hook is this is all done while you’re piloting a mech, so instead of slowly spreading seeds in a field you’re using an arm-mounted cannon to fire them into the mounds. This also allows for a lot of customization and such, like different attachments and even forms your mech can take. Funny enough, the team added a new automation update on Thursday that, at my current level, allows for a drone to water my crops for me. Hopefully I get more helpful tools before I finish up, which shouldn’t take too long as I just need to reach Milestone 10 to unlock everything I need to get the “final”/furthest achievement as of this writing. The problem with the developer’s clear aim to keep the game updated (which, to be fair, is still in Game Preview) is I’m likely gonna have to buy this someday to polish off more achievements. Eh, I’m okay with that, me thinks.
