Gamefly was kind enough to send me another month of rentals, and this time I decided to forgo just playing super fast/easy games, aiming more for “doable” and around 10-15 hours for the completion. After some research, I went with Cloudpunk to start! I truly didn’t know anything about this beyond the completion time estimate and the fact all the achievements were obtainable. Turns out this is a fairly impressive open-world delivery simulator where you play as Rania as she acclimates to moving to one of the last cities in the world, Nivalis, and working for the titular sketch delivery service. Flying about the various districts of the city in your flying car was cool enough, but I didn’t expect you could also get out of your car at various points to wander around neighborhoods. It starts as a third-person perspective, but I quickly switched to first-person and it really elevates the entire experience. The voxel artwork is lovely to look at, portraying the futuristic yet grimy metropolis, and every line is voiced by a fun cast doing their best. I think the only voice I took umbrage with is one for a “little girl” that is very clearly a grown woman with some filters on her voice. It’s wildly distracting! The character models also aren’t… great. At least the rest of the game is easy, and I never felt any stress from managing my HOVA’s damage rating or fuel, nor were the four total timed deliveries very strenuous. I really enjoyed this more than I expected, and I’m almost tempted to do the Xbox Series stack.

Just another night on the town.
I had a moment on Tuesday when I had nothing to do, so I figured I’d just go and knock out the rest of Human Fall Flat. The final (final???) add-on added recently was Candyland, and it’s just like every other update to the game. More physics-based nonsense in a new setting. There are two actually kinda tough achievements this time around, but both can be cheesed by scaling the terrain and skipping the sections in question. Quick and short and this is at 100%. Again.

An entire land of diabetes!
It was time for my next 2024 game! In my ongoing quest to check out (and stream) games from last year that I bet aren’t as bad as reviews and/or sales made them out to be, I grabbed Funko Fusion in this week’s sale and started it on Wednesday. If you’ve played any of the LEGO games, you kinda have the idea: licensed toys run around themed levels doing simple puzzles using character-specific abilities and smashing everything in sight for stu- er, vinyl. While I haven’t played any of the more modern entries in the LEGO series, I have to say this feels much more like a “game” and more polished overall compared to those I’ve played. The combat can actually be a little difficult, and the bosses, too. But the latter is more to the huge issue I have with this game: it all feels VERY tedious and annoying. Like, many objectives aren’t super obvious, and there’s not a whole lot of direction (design-wise, visually, or even outright text) to what you’re supposed to do. This includes the boss fights, which can be pretty frustrating. Despite all this, I think this game is pretty cool, if only for the fact they picked some wild choices for included properties, like Jaws, The Umbrella Academy, The Mummy, Scott Pilgrim, and Hot Fuzz, of all things. And more! That’s pretty neat! Overall, I’m enjoying this so far, though having to slowly scroll through a rotating box to choose characters is starting to wear on me… But I only have one more world to play through (before going back to clean up the collectibles) so hopefully it doesn’t end on a bad note!
I do wonder something: Who is this game for? It’s cutesy, like a family title. But, includes very mature titles, like Chucky and Shaun of the Dead. Heck, the final Hot Fuzz boss ends just as it does in the movie (ie bloody). Sure, some brutal scenes have a bottle or two of ketchup lying nearby. But then they also use swear words (including the “f-word”)! I don’t know. It’s a very weird mash-up.
